Mare is one of Split’s most exciting new dining spots, combining creative food, signature cocktails and a bold pink interior with a story deeply rooted in the city itself. Located at Trogirska 10, right in the heart of Split, Mare is just a short walk from Diocletian’s Palace, Pjaca and the Riva waterfront, making it an easy stop for anyone exploring the historic city centre.
Despite what its name might suggest, Mare isn’t named after the sea. The restaurant pays tribute to Mare Žebon, a legendary local character remembered for her distinctive personality and sense of humour. A famous photograph of Mare taken by Split photographer Feđa Klarić shows her on Pjaca wearing a Hajduk football shirt and bright pink socks. Those socks became the inspiration for the restaurant’s unmistakable pink interior, while Mare’s portrait holds a prominent place inside.
Behind the concept are Ela and Luka Bokavšek, known for popular Split restaurants Bokeria and Bokamorra, together with chef Karlo Kaleb, whose culinary background includes Michelin-level experience. The result is a restaurant that takes food seriously without creating a formal dining atmosphere.
The Mare menu revolves around small plates designed for sharing. Instead of the traditional starter-and-main-course format, guests are encouraged to order several dishes for the table and experience different flavours together. Mediterranean ingredients meet contemporary techniques and international influences, creating a menu that feels playful, modern and well suited to a relaxed evening with friends.
Dishes presented as part of the concept have included Mare’s take on patatas bravas, Adriatic tuna with capers, lemon and tomato, and stuffed pasta with young cheese, miso, brown butter and truffle. The menu evolves with the seasons, so checking the latest Mare menu before visiting is worthwhile.
Cocktails are just as important as the food. Mare’s Bar La Fontaine features a specially developed system for serving cocktails on tap, with a menu of original creations ranging from fresh and citrus-driven drinks to more complex combinations. Previous highlights have included a Martini infused with Dalmatian herbs and a playful Espresso Martini inspired by tiramisu.
At the centre of Mare is a large communal table that captures the idea behind the restaurant: good food is better when shared. Combined with its striking design, relaxed atmosphere and central Split location, Mare works equally well for dinner with friends, a date night or cocktails and a few plates before heading out into the city.
If you’re looking for a restaurant in Split that goes beyond the usual Mediterranean dining experience, Mare offers something genuinely different. Explore the latest menu and book your table at Mare Split online through Table Joe, 24/7.
